What Does Bi Curious Mean?

What it means, how it compares with bisexual, and where to go from here.

Bi curious means being curious about, or open to, sexual experiences with people of a gender you are not usually attracted to. Dictionary.com defines it as “curious about or open to exploring sexual relations with people of a different gender than those to whom one is usually attracted.” It names where you are now, not a test to pass.

Nobody hands out the label and nobody checks it. Some people use it for years; others drop it after one experience, because bisexual fits better or because it wasn’t for them.

Signs You Might Be Bi Curious

There is no checklist. You might notice:

  • a crush on a friend of the same sex that won’t quite fade;
  • daydreams or fantasies that take you by surprise;
  • looking twice at a man, or a woman, in a way you didn’t expect;
  • a spark of interest when you see two men or two women together;
  • a kiss at a party years ago that you still think about.

None of these means you are bisexual. Each one simply means you are curious, and that is all the word asks of you.

Bi Curious vs Bisexual: Wondering or Knowing

The easiest way to tell them apart: bisexual describes an attraction you recognise in yourself, and bi curious describes an interest you are exploring. The Trevor Project puts it this way: “Bisexual people have the capacity to form attraction and/or relationships to more than one gender.” Bi curious makes no claim about attraction yet. It says you would like to find out.

Some people start out curious and settle on bisexual after a first experience; others stay curious for good, or decide one or two adventures were enough. For the fuller picture, read what bisexuality actually is, and if the same question keeps coming back, work through Am I bisexual?

Each line sums up that source’s own definition.

Heteroflexible, Homoflexible and Straight Curious

These sit close to bi curious. Bi.org, the American Institute of Bisexuality’s site, defines heteroflexible as “An identity label that falls under the bi umbrella that describes people who mostly exhibit heterosexual attraction patterns, but occasionally experience homosexual attraction”. Homoflexible is the mirror image: “An identity label that falls under the bi umbrella that describes people who mostly exhibit homosexual attraction patterns, but occasionally experience heterosexual attractions.”

What separates them from bi curious is certainty. A heteroflexible person already knows the occasional same-sex attraction is part of them. A bi curious person may not know yet, and wants to find out.

Straight curious and gay curious work like bi curious, naming a curiosity rather than an identity. On My Bisexual Secret, Straight Curious is one of the profile tags: a way of saying your life so far has been straight and you would like to try something new. Gay curious turns up too. As with any of these words, read the rest of someone’s profile before you assume. More words like these, from biromantic to on the down low, are in our bisexual dating terms glossary.

Is It Normal to Be Bi Curious?

Yes. Wondering about someone outside your usual type doesn’t make you confused, greedy or in denial, and you are far from the only one.

Gallup’s polling counts the labels people choose rather than curiosity, but it shows how ordinary attraction to more than one gender is. In figures published in February 2026, 5.3% of American adults described themselves as bisexual in 2025, up from 3.1% in 2020. That was more than half of everyone who identified as LGBTQ+, which makes bi the most common LGBTQ+ identity in Gallup’s results.

Those are people who have settled on a word. If you are still wondering, you are simply earlier on.

What to Do With the Feeling

Nothing has to happen: knowing the curiosity is there is a perfectly good place to stop. If you want more, start small.

  • Notice without deciding. Pay attention to who catches your eye, and leave the conclusions for later.
  • Talk before anything else. A chat with someone who has been there takes much of the fear out of it, and bi curious dating shows how that works here.
  • Plan a first meet when you are ready. Our step-by-step guide to your first bi experience takes it from hello to the morning after.
  • If you have a partner, think about them too. The honest options, from talking it through to exploring together, are in bi curious with a partner.

The Questions Curious People Ask

Can a straight person be bi curious?

Yes. Bi curious means curiosity about a gender other than the one you usually go for, so a straight man wondering about men, or a straight woman wondering about women, fits exactly. So does a gay man or woman curious about the opposite sex.

Am I bi curious or bisexual?

Ask yourself whether you are wondering or already know. If you have felt drawn to more than one gender for a while, bisexual may fit better. If you want to find out, bi curious does. Either can change later.

Is bi curious a sexual orientation?

It works more as a description of where you are than as an orientation, since Dictionary.com defines it by curiosity and openness rather than settled attraction. Where it leads is up to you.

What is the difference between bi curious and heteroflexible?

Bi.org describes heteroflexible as an identity under the bi umbrella for people who are mostly attracted to the opposite sex and occasionally to the same sex. Bi curious is about curiosity: you may not know yet whether attraction is the right word.

Is there a bi curious tag on My Bisexual Secret?

Yes. Bicurious and Straight Curious are both profile tags, and First Time Encounter or Chat Only tell people how you would like to start.
