Your Mardi Gras 2027 Diary
Mardi Gras season runs from February into March every year, and the 2027 festival takes the theme HYPERBLOOM. Pencil these in:
- Friday 12 February 2027: the festival opens.
- Sunday 14 February 2027: Fair Day in Victoria Park, Camperdown, so Valentine's Day comes with a crowd.
- Saturday 6 March 2027: the Parade, along Oxford Street, Flinders Street and Anzac Parade.
- Sunday 7 March 2027: the festival's final day.
It all began on 24 June 1978, when about 1,500 marchers took to Oxford Street and 53 were arrested.
Oxford Street, Newtown and a Drink to Break the Ice
Oxford Street through Darlinghurst is widely recognised as Sydney's main gay district. The stretch from Hyde Park to Paddington Town Hall has been the Golden Mile since the early 1980s, with Taylor Square at its centre; Australia's first rainbow crossing appeared there in 2013, and today's carries the Progress Pride flag. Destination NSW's Rainbow Precinct spills over into Surry Hills.
The Stonewall Hotel at 175 Oxford Street has drag and DJs five nights a week, and The Oxford Hotel at 134 Oxford Street opens daily, with shows booked into December 2026. In Erskineville, the Imperial Hotel at 35 Erskineville Road has been LGBTQIA+ since 1983 and puts on live drag from Wednesday to Saturday. That corner of the inner west, with Newtown's King Street and St Peters, had the highest share of female same-sex couples in the 2011 census.
For a first date, a bar near Taylor Square or on King Street keeps it public and easy. amBi, the bi social club, has no Sydney chapter (its only Australian one is in Adelaide), so start with the bars, Mardi Gras events and the members here.
